(A sharing heart)

I am a North Korean refugee who came to South Korea 3 years ago and I am attending a university in Seoul.

Even before I started going to university I felt that living in South Korea is difficult.

When I first came out of Hanawon center I was full of hope, but this spark quickly disappeared.

Despite this I attended vocational school and found a job almost immediately so this made me think that I am very smart and everything will be fine.
I will get a bigger salary and will manage things better than the other people. However after I worked for a year I realized that I was very conceited thinking this way.

It was getting harder and I asked myself several times a day whether what I was doing was really right.

However it was quite inconvenient to just quit my job.

The environment there was nice and it also provided me with opportunities for professional development.

For some reason, however, the more I persevered the harder it got.

Most importantly I wasn’t healthy.

I thought it might be because of occupational illness and decided to search for a new path in life.

That’s why I started thinking about getting into university, a thought that worried me a lot in the past.

Since I am a little bit older, I hesitated about going to school.

However, after thinking it through, I decided to do it.

Student life was not easy but it was much happier than work life.

The thing I liked most about it was that I could meet other North Korean refugees like me.

Actually, although I am a refugee myself, I couldn’t meet others like me.

While I lived in hiding for 7 years in China, I didn’t reveal that I was North Korean and didn’t want to meet other refugees.

Even when I came to South Korea, I did not have many chances to get in touch with other North Koreans, except for a few very close people.

More precisely I’d better say that I didn’t really want to meet any refugees, rather than not having a chance to.

However university life changed my unsocial lifestyle.

There were a lot of North Korean students on campus and even if I had decided not to meet with them, I still did and as a result we exchanged a lot of information.

As time passed by, I felt that all my North Korean schoolmates were good-hearted and passionate, and I was ashamed of my selfishness.

I was very surprised to see that they considered other people’s pain their own, helped each other and study just as well as South Korean students.

I have decided to escape from the timid life I have led so far, to make new friends and to study hard with new determination.

I received another big present this winter vacation.

PSCORE provided me with a private language tutor for free.

I had applied for classes in English and French and although I thought it would be hard, they found me a French teacher first.

During the vacation I studied hard English and French and due to the efforts of the teachers my skills improved.

I was deeply touched by their sharing hearts.

No matter whether it was cold, or windy, or rainy, they never ignored our appointment and traveled a long distance to teach me whole-heartedly.

Until this day to me it seems that they have hearts of gold.

There are many people like them in South Korea.

Although news and TV are full of bad stories, actually there are many good ones unknown to the wide public.

After more than one year of studying at university, I met and made friends with so many more people than before.

I realized that when you open your heart and challenge yourself with new experiences, there are many wonderful things that come to you.

When would this kind of thinking be transferred to North Korea as well?

When I left the campus late this evening I saw a falling star cutting through the sky. I joined my hands together and made a wish.
