Four local bands will come together for “Rock Out Vol. 12” to raise funds for North Korean defectors at Freebird Sonic Live in the Hongdae area of western Seoul, Saturday (30.07.2016)
Beginning at 8 p.m., the event will feature Sons of Tiger, Wasted Johnny’s, A’Z bus and Rock ‘n’ Roll Radio.
This charity concert was organized by the North Korean human rights NGO Korea PSCORE (People for Successful COrean REunification). The proceeds will be used to finance educational activities and social programs for North Korean defectors in South Korea.
“Bringing local bands and the community together during a night of killer music for the sake of a meaningful cause,” the event organizer says. “Proceeds will go towards PSCORE’s English language tutoring program for North Korean defectors.”
Kim Young-il, a former North Korean soldier who managed to escape the country with his family, founded PSCORE in 2006. PSCORE is a nonreligious and nonpartisan NGO based in Seoul.
“Along with a group of South Koreans and foreigners, Kim Young-Il brought PSCORE to life in order to advocate for the rights of the North Korean people and to provide North Koreans with a platform to discuss democracy and human rights,” the organizer says.
PSCORE works towards this mission through a series of programs such as a mentoring program and a human rights and democracy program.
“We also provide emergency aid to North Korean refugees in China. All of our programs are designed to garner support for the reunification of North and South Korea. PSCORE helps North Korean defectors become self-sufficient because we believe that they can actively contribute to the reunification process,” the group says on its homepage.
Since its founding, PSCORE has been an active and outspoken advocate for the protection of human rights in North Korea.
PSCORE is the only NGO focusing exclusively on North Korean human rights that has attained U.N. Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) special consultative status.
Tickets can be purchased at the door for 10,000 won.
